Mixtape | "Yoga Mix" [For My Mom's Yoga Studio]

Thus cementing her as the coolest yogini around.

The only gift my mom asked for this Christmas was a mix that can be played during classes at her studio.

I took a class once where an instructor played all these nontraditional songs like The Beatles’ "Blue Jay Way" and Pink Floyd’s "Us and Them." I thought it worked on some level (a bit distracting, and the reggae was a stretch). Any purist wouldn’t be down with such a soundtrack. But I’m still hoping some medium exists between spacey pop music and that standard hum of sitars and flutes.

To compliment meditation, does music have to be so ambient that it's essentially forgettable? I'm leaning towards no. Below are a few lovely tracks that I think can add to (rather than interrupt) your yoga atmosphere.

The second disc took shape after finding some tracks were too active for the “quiet” mix. So disc two is for something like Power Yoga (and either would go fine with studying/headphones/relaxing). Each one is up for free download. Follow the links.

One | "Quiet"
01. Stars of the Lid - Apreludes (in C sharp major)
02. M83 - I Guess I'm Floating
03. Panda Bear - Untitled 07
04. Cut Copy - Eternity One Night Only
05. Animal Collective - The Softest Voice
06. Grouper - Traveling Through A Sea
07. Stars of the Lid - Hiberner Toujours
08. Grouper - We've All Gone To Sleep
09. Hauschka - Blue Bicycle
10. Mogwai - Thank You Space Expert
11. Jóhann Jóhannsson - Fordlândia
12. Working For A Nuclear Free City - Pixelated Birds
13. Sigur Rós - Fljótavík
14. Jonny Greenwood - Moon Trills
15. Radiohead - Treefingers

Two | "Power"
01. Fleet Foxes - Sun Giant
02. Air France - Windmill Wedding
03. Jonny Greenwood - Open Spaces
04. Beach House - Holy Dances
05. Panda Bear - Im Not
06. Jon Brion - Theme
07. Animal Collective - Loch Raven
08. Deerhunter - Green Jacket
09. Grizzly Bear - Easier
10. High Places - Greeting the Light
11. Shearwater - I Was A Cloud
12. Brian Eno And David Byrne - Solo Guitar With Tin Foil
13. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Father Christmas
14. Joanna Newsom - Swansea
15. Bon Iver - Beach Baby
16. Samara Lubelski - Ego Blossoms
17. Quiet Village - Victoria's Secret
18. M83 - Waves, Waves, Waves

Hopefully these sort correctly on your iTunes. Let me know. I'm new to the process and plan on making more. Enjoy and have a safe and happy New Year. (Update: these don't sort correctly, and I'm too lazy to fix that, still, they should have a good effect out of sequence).

Also: I got my hands on the new (leaked) Animal Collective album last night. Yes.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your yoga mixes! Your mom's studio is lucky to have some amazing tunes pumping through its walls. Where does she teach? I'll have to be sure to take my next class there. You had me ad David Byrne, Bon Iver, Deerhunter and Grizzly Bear. Great blog!As an Austinite living in OC, I often find myself disappointed with the lack of musical knowledge in this area.. Keep on rockin.
